The Wonderlic Personnel Test. It sounds like a military aptitude test or a jacked-up civil service exam. But its actually a test being implemented in the 2008 NFL Draft as a way of rating the intellect of prospective NFL stars.br /br /On its website, Wonderlic describes its mission as helping businesses and schools identify, select and retain the right people. The website fails to allude to any goal of helping NFL teams identify, select and retain the least stupid players.br /br /Curious, I went online and scoured for sample Wonderlic test material. Let me start off by bragging: I aced the sample tests. Apparently I am the right people that Wonderlic wants to help identify, select and retain.br /br /Yet somehow I dont feel like Im ready to step in and take Brett Favres place this fall.br /br /I take a certain pride in my ability to make half-baked justifications sound good. I consider myself a very, very good bulls****er. But even I find myself utterly incapable of applying many parts of the Wonderlic test to the realm of professional football. I realize that the test is only being used as a small piece of the pie when it comes to selecting the next batch of superstar disappointments, but some of these questions, man… come on. Even the ASVAB would seem more appropriate.br /br /Lets take a moment to critically examine some of the questions I was asked while perusing Wonderlics official sample test.br /br /Three individuals form a partnership and agree to divide the profits equally… how much less does X receive than if the profits were divided proportionately? Its (dramatic noise) business math! At the very best, these types of questions might help these kids as they figure out new and exciting ways to blow the six-figure salaries they havent earned yet. But do story problems about unwise investment strategies really apply to slant routes and snap counts? Im hard pressed to make any connection.br /br /How about this one: A boy is 17 years old and his sister is twice as old. When the boy is 23 years old, how old will his sister be? I dont get it. Is the boy deciding between man-to-man or zone coverage on his sister? This type of knowledge might help prevent a statutory rape scandal, but again, its on-field implications are vague at best.br /br /In the end, it seems like the Wonderlic test is just one more effort to make the NFL offseason somewhat interesting (kind of like the 2008 NFL Draft itself.) And, of course, one more thing for half-assed sportswriters to ramble about on the internet.

Typical references to the Judeo-Christian heritage need to be replaced by an approach appealing to universal values based on human rights, self-determination, and opposition to occupation and dictatorships. Obama needs to find a way to apologize for the past and to convince people that he is planning to change course. No one expects the U.S. president to totally change U.S. policy, but people will welcome efforts to turn a new page based on fairness and trust./p
pObama could weaken the accusations of U.S. double standards and help dispel the false connection between Islam and terrorism #8212; as well as demonstrating a reason to trust an American president #8212; by establishing low-level negotiations with the elected members of the Palestinian legislature who ran on the reform-and-change bloc headed by Ismail Haniyeh. pFinally, here comes the very belated blog post you have been longing for! Many things have happened to me since I last posted on this blog – four months and six days to be exact, and I will try my best to recall as much of these events in an chronological fashion. I am not sure where I should begin, but I will start with the trip to Las Vegas for the math competition back in late March as that is the first thing comes to mind./p

pAs mentioned two posts ago regarding the math competition in Las Vegas, I (and the rest of team, along with our chaperones) traveled to Las Vegas on March 25th. The flight was about six hours long and I dont think I have done anything special on board except dreamed about what kind of delicious dinner I would get once the plane lands to feed my hungry self. Fortunately the plane did not crush despite it was pretty rocky the whole time, however, my dream for the delicious dinner was crushed. The plane landed on time and I was taken to the Flamingo Las Vegas hotel by a really cool cab driver, but the nightmare started the moment we stepped inside the hotel – we waited in the shopping center for approximately two hours before receiving our keys to our rooms. After that I dragged my starving self to the buffet inside the hotel – the food wasnt disastrous but not what I have dreamed about on the plan, and that at least one of the staff isnt very professional, so to speak./p

pI guess I should move on to something more interesting before boring you out./p
pWe went to a few workshops at the conference and prepared for the competition on the 28th. I wasnt as nervous as I should on the day of the competition, just being the chill guy that I always am. However, being at the national level of the competition, I knew the competition is going to be tough. Well, the competition was tough indeed. Even though my team answered every question correctly in the first round of the Jeopard-styled (but the rules are different) competition, taking the highest possible amount of points, there was still a tiny gap between my team and two other teams in terms of points. On the second (final) round, the competition was still fierce, but my team was on a roll, answered every questions right and took in the highest maximum amount of points once again. The ranking changed, my team is now on top of the chart with a comfortable margin./p
pWe waited for some time and the results came in – my team placed second in the competition. Although we excelled at the team competition, but the whole competition also took our individual test scores and team engineering test score into account. I was rather upset that we didnt win the competition, but I know we did our best and I am proud of my team. We went on to congratulate the winning team and they were undoubtedly remarkable in the competition./p

pOn the night of March 29th, the night after the competition and our last night there, we decided to walk down the Las Vegas Strip for some sight-seeings. The Strip is not as amazing as I hoped it would be but it was still a great experience nonetheless./p
pWe left Las Vegas the next morning, stopped at Chicago Midway International Airport for two hours where I had some bitter French fries from McDonalds, and we flew back to Columbus./p

pBlood donation! I donated blood for the first time this year during my schools Blood Drive on April 24th. I guess I didnt have enough breakfast that morning, my stomach started feeling uncomfortable soon after the process started and the Red Cross staff had to have me lay down, which relieved my urge to throw up. I might donate blood again and I will make sure to have a full breakfast before going. /p

pMay 5th was my schools senior prom. There isnt a lot to talk about it besides that it rained (I dont like rain) and that the dinner served at the prom was subpar. Seriously, if the dinners not good, I want my money back. (I cant do anything about that though, unfortunately) On that same day, I understood why (some) girls spend onsiderably more time than (most) guys to get prepared, which I find ridiculously understandable./p
pFinally, I would like to note that I will be attending emThe/em Ohio State University in the Fall of 2009 majoring in Computer Science. I would also like to thank Ed for giving me the opportunity to intern at Emerge Inc. again this summer./p
